Building Stronger Communities in Arizona: My Experience at OCA Greater Phoenix's Together Tuesday Event

Together Tuesday: Bringing Arizona's Asian Community Leaders Together at West USA Realty Chandler

Recently, I had the honor of hosting Together Tuesday at the West USA Realty Chandler office, where I proudly serve clients throughout Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Tempe, and the Greater Phoenix area.

The event was organized by OCA Greater Phoenix and brought together nonprofit leaders, community advocates, youth leaders, and professionals representing many Asian American communities across Arizona. It was inspiring to welcome so many dedicated individuals into our office for an evening focused on collaboration, leadership, and community building.

About OCA Greater Phoenix

OCA Greater Phoenix is the Arizona chapter of OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing civic engagement, leadership development, education, advocacy, and community outreach for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities.

Through youth leadership programs, community initiatives, and cultural engagement, OCA helps connect individuals and organizations that are working to make a positive impact throughout Arizona.

To learn more about OCA Greater Phoenix:

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/OCAGreaterPhoenixChapter

Community Leaders United by a Common Purpose

One of the most meaningful parts of the evening was seeing leaders from many different organizations gathered together under one roof.

Representatives from numerous Asian communities attended, including:

  • Vietnamese

  • Chinese

  • Korean

  • Filipino

  • Japanese

  • Indian

  • Taiwanese

  • Thai

  • Cambodian

  • Indonesian

  • Malaysian

  • Pakistani

  • Bangladeshi

  • Pacific Islander communities

While each organization serves a unique population and mission, everyone shared a common goal: finding ways to support one another and strengthen the communities they represent.

The conversations focused on collaboration, leadership, youth development, cultural awareness, and community engagement. Rather than working independently, many leaders discussed opportunities to partner together, share resources, and support future events and initiatives.

Recognizing Farhana Shifa Ahmed's Leadership

A special recognition goes to Farhana Shifa Ahmed, whose dedication to community leadership has helped bring people together across many different backgrounds and cultures.

Farhana has been actively involved with OCA Greater Phoenix and has worked to support leadership development, civic engagement, and community outreach. Her passion for building connections was reflected throughout the evening and served as a reminder of the importance of community-driven leadership.

A Delicious Meal Prepared by Sarina Ahmed

Guests also enjoyed a wonderful dinner prepared by Sarina Ahmed, one of OCA Greater Phoenix's Leadership Student Interns.

The food was absolutely delicious and added a warm and welcoming atmosphere to the gathering. It was especially inspiring to see a young leader actively contributing to the event and demonstrating the next generation of community leadership that OCA continues to develop.

Why Events Like This Matter

Arizona's strength comes from its diverse communities. Events like Together Tuesday create opportunities for leaders to build relationships, learn from one another, and work together toward shared goals.

As both a real estate professional and a community advocate, I believe strong neighborhoods are built not only through homeownership but also through meaningful connections between people and organizations.

Hosting this event at our West USA Realty Chandler office was a privilege, and I am grateful to everyone who attended and contributed to such a positive and productive evening.

Final Thoughts

Together Tuesday was a powerful reminder that when community leaders come together, great things can happen.

I am thankful to OCA Greater Phoenix, Farhana Shifa Ahmed, Sarina Ahmed, and all the nonprofit leaders and community representatives who attended. Seeing leaders from Vietnamese, Chinese, Korean, Filipino, Indian, Japanese, and many other Asian communities gathered together with a shared spirit of collaboration was truly inspiring.

I look forward to continuing to support events that strengthen relationships, celebrate diversity, and help build a stronger Arizona for everyone.

Celebrating Community: Reflections from FANOGCS' 6th Anniversary and Leadership Transition

What I Learned About Community at FANOGCS' 6th Anniversary Celebration

An Evening of Leadership, Gratitude, Service, and the Bonds That Bring People Together

When A-Jay Manabat invited me to attend the Filipino American Nurses Organization of the Grand Canyon State (FANOGCS) 6th Anniversary Celebration and Induction of Officers, I honestly didn't know what to expect.

I didn't know many people attending.

I wasn't familiar with the organization's history.

I simply wanted to support a community event and learn more about FANOGCS.

What I didn't expect was to leave feeling inspired by the strength of a community that has built something truly special over the past six years.

From the moment I walked into the Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf Resort in Chandler, Arizona, I could feel the energy in the room. Nurses, healthcare professionals, community leaders, family members, and supporters gathered together to celebrate not only an organization's achievements but also the relationships that have helped make those achievements possible.

More Than a Nursing Organization

Founded in 2020, FANOGCS was built on a mission of Knowledge, Empowerment, and Service. The organization supports Filipino American nurses through education, leadership development, mentorship, community involvement, and humanitarian outreach.

But after spending an evening with its members, I realized that FANOGCS represents something even greater.

It represents connection.

Throughout the night, I listened to stories about mentorship, volunteer work, healthcare outreach, scholarships, professional growth, and lifelong friendships. What stood out most was the genuine support members showed one another.

In many organizations, people come together because they share a profession.

At FANOGCS, it felt like people stayed because they had become family.

You could see it in the conversations.

You could feel it in the laughter.

And later in the evening, you could see it in one unforgettable moment that brought the entire room together.

The celebration included the induction of officers for the 2026–2028 term and the official transition of leadership from outgoing President Alain De La Cruz to incoming President Janice Desiongco.

As the evening moved toward the Passing of the Nurse's Lamp and Gavel Ceremony, the atmosphere became more emotional.

Before the formal transfer of leadership, the officers gathered around Alain.

What happened next revealed everything I needed to know about FANOGCS.

The officers began singing Bruno Mars' Count On Me.

There was no need for elaborate speeches.

No need for grand gestures.

The song itself said everything.

As they sang, you could see the appreciation in their faces. The respect. The friendships. The memories they had built together through years of service and leadership.

Then Alain became emotional.

And so did many others.

Including me.

I found myself wiping away tears as I watched a group of people openly express their gratitude to someone who had invested so much of himself into helping the organization grow.

What moved me wasn't simply seeing a president being honored.

What moved me was seeing the culture that FANOGCS has built.

The tribute wasn't really about one person.

It was about a community that values service.

A community that remembers those who helped build it.

A community that understands leadership is not about titles but about lifting others up.

The appreciation shown to Alain De La Cruz reflected the impact he made during his presidency. The respect in that room had clearly been earned through dedication, humility, and genuine care for the people he served.

At the same time, the evening was also about looking forward.

As Alain passed the Nurse's Lamp and Gavel, he officially entrusted leadership to Janice Desiongco, who begins her term as President for 2026–2028.

What I appreciated most about the transition was the sense of continuity.

This didn't feel like an ending.

It felt like a new chapter.

The foundation built by previous leaders now continues under Janice's leadership, supported by a dedicated team of officers and members who share the same commitment to FANOGCS' mission.

Watching Janice step into her new role, I could feel the excitement and confidence from those around her. The support from members was a reminder that strong organizations are never built by one person alone. They are built by communities working together toward a shared vision.

One thing that impressed me after the event was learning more about the organization's impact beyond Arizona. FANOGCS has organized healthcare outreach programs, educational conferences, scholarships, volunteer initiatives, and international medical missions. Through these efforts, the organization continues to live out its mission of Knowledge, Empowerment, and Service while making a difference both locally and globally.

For those interested in learning more about FANOGCS and its work, you can visit:

• Official Website: https://fanogcs.org

• Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/FANOGCS

• Organization Highlights: https://fanogcs.org/highlights/

• President's Message and Mission: https://fanogcs.org/presidents-page/

By the end of the evening, I understood why FANOGCS has grown and why so many people are passionate about being part of it.

The awards were wonderful.

The celebration was beautiful.

The entertainment was fun.

But what stayed with me was something much simpler.

It was the kindness between members.

The respect shown to leaders.

The friendships that have been built over time.

And the commitment to serving others.

When A-Jay first invited me to this event, I didn't know many people in the room.

By the end of the evening, I understood something special about FANOGCS.

It wasn't the size of the organization.

It wasn't the awards or the accomplishments.

It was the people.

The way they support one another.

The way they honor their leaders.

The way they celebrate service and community.

Watching the officers gather around Alain De La Cruz and sing Count On Me wasn't just a tribute to one leader. It was a reflection of the culture that FANOGCS has built over the last six years.

I arrived as a guest.

I left inspired.

And that's a feeling I'll remember for a very long time.

Congratulations to outgoing President Alain De La Cruz for his dedication, leadership, and service to FANOGCS. The appreciation shown throughout the evening was a testament to the positive impact he has made on the organization and its members.

Congratulations as well to incoming President Janice Desiongco and the entire 2026–2028 Board of Officers. As you begin this new chapter of leadership, may you continue to build upon the strong foundation of Knowledge, Empowerment, and Service that has guided FANOGCS from the beginning.

Wishing all of the newly inducted officers success as they serve, lead, and inspire the FANOGCS community in the years ahead.

Thank you, FANOGCS, for allowing me to witness such a meaningful celebration of leadership, service, and community.

Arizona Community Spotlight: Las Damas de Rizal Arizona Celebrates a Historic Inaugural Oath-Taking Ceremony

Arizona Community Spotlight: Las Damas de Rizal Arizona Celebrates a Historic Inaugural Oath-Taking Ceremony

Honoring Filipino Heritage, Women's Leadership, and the Legacy of Dr. José Rizal

Arizona's Filipino-American community recently celebrated a significant milestone with the Inaugural Oath-Taking Ceremony of Las Damas de Rizal Arizona, held in conjunction with the 11th Knights of Rizal Commanders Ball and the celebration of the 165th Birth Anniversary of Dr. José P. Rizal.

The event marked the official beginning of a new chapter for Las Damas de Rizal Arizona, an organization dedicated to empowering women through leadership, service, cultural preservation, and community engagement inspired by the ideals of Dr. José Rizal.

As a guest at the event, I had the opportunity to witness an evening filled with tradition, inspiration, and a shared commitment to preserving Filipino heritage while investing in future generations of leaders.

What Is Las Damas de Rizal Arizona?

Las Damas de Rizal Arizona is a nonprofit organization committed to advancing the teachings and values of Dr. José Rizal through education, leadership, volunteerism, cultural awareness, and community service.

The organization was established to provide women with opportunities to lead, serve, and make meaningful contributions to their communities while promoting Filipino culture and heritage.

The inaugural oath-taking ceremony represented more than the installation of officers—it symbolized the beginning of a movement focused on empowering women and strengthening communities throughout Arizona.

Honoring the Legacy of Dr. José Rizal

Dr. José Rizal, recognized as the national hero of the Philippines, dedicated his life to education, peaceful reform, civic responsibility, and national pride. His writings and advocacy inspired generations of Filipinos and continue to influence leaders around the world today.

More than 165 years after his birth, his ideals remain relevant through organizations like Las Damas de Rizal and the Knights of Rizal, which continue to promote cultural understanding, leadership development, and service to others.

The event served as a powerful reminder that preserving history is not simply about remembering the past—it is about carrying forward the values that can inspire future generations.

A Visionary Leader Creating a Lasting Legacy

One of the most inspiring aspects of the evening was learning more about Lady Honorary Consul Jenny Ho-Vijungco, Founder and Chairwoman of the Board of Las Damas de Rizal Arizona.

While organizations are often recognized for their programs and accomplishments, their impact begins with leaders who have the vision and determination to bring people together. Through Las Damas de Rizal Arizona, Jenny has created more than an organization—she has created a platform where women can lead, serve, inspire, and preserve cultural heritage for generations to come.

As Arizona's Honorary Philippine Consul, community advocate, healthcare administrator, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, Jenny has dedicated her efforts to strengthening the Filipino-American community and building meaningful connections throughout Arizona.

Her leadership reflects a deep commitment to service, education, cultural pride, and empowering others to make a positive difference.

What stood out most throughout the evening was the sense of purpose behind the organization. Las Damas de Rizal Arizona embodies the Filipino spirit of bayanihan—the tradition of unity, cooperation, and helping one another for the greater good.

The inaugural oath-taking ceremony was not only a milestone for the organization but also a reflection of Jenny's vision becoming reality. Seeing community leaders, families, professionals, and supporters gathered together demonstrated the impact that one person's dedication can have on an entire community.

Through her leadership, Jenny Ho-Vijungco is helping build a legacy that will continue to inspire women, strengthen communities, and preserve Filipino heritage throughout Arizona for years to come.

A Celebration of Leadership, Culture, and Community

The evening brought together leaders from across Arizona who share a commitment to service, cultural preservation, and community involvement.

Guests gathered to celebrate not only the installation of Las Damas de Rizal Arizona's leadership but also the importance of mentorship, volunteerism, education, and civic engagement.

The event showcased the strength of Arizona's Filipino-American community while creating opportunities for connection, collaboration, and future community initiatives.

As someone who is Vietnamese-American, I especially appreciated the opportunity to learn more about Filipino traditions and witness the strong sense of pride and unity that was present throughout the evening.

Events like this remind us that while our cultures may have unique histories and traditions, our shared values of family, service, education, and community bring us together.

Looking Toward the Future

The formation of Las Damas de Rizal Arizona represents an exciting step forward for leadership development, cultural preservation, and community service in Arizona.

As the organization continues to grow, its mission will undoubtedly create opportunities for women to lead, inspire, and contribute to meaningful causes while carrying forward the ideals of Dr. José Rizal.

The inaugural oath-taking ceremony was a celebration of both heritage and hope—a reminder that strong communities are built through service, leadership, education, and a commitment to helping others succeed.

Congratulations to the officers, members, and supporters of Las Damas de Rizal Arizona on this historic milestone. The future looks bright, and the impact of your work will be felt for generations to come.

Chandler Community Spotlight: Supporting Team USA Karate Athlete Joshua Corbin's Journey to Brazil

At the heart of every strong community are individuals who inspire others through hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down with Joshua Corbin, an elite Team USA Karate athlete who is preparing to represent the United States at an international competition in Brazil.

As someone who is passionate about supporting our local community, I wanted to share Joshua's story and help raise awareness about his journey.

Meet Joshua Corbin

Joshua is not only a talented martial artist but also a dedicated athlete who has spent years training and competing at a high level. His commitment to excellence has earned him the opportunity to represent Team USA on the international stage—a remarkable achievement that reflects countless hours of discipline, sacrifice, and determination.

Competing internationally is a dream for many athletes, but reaching this level requires much more than talent alone. It takes years of preparation, support from family and coaches, and the encouragement of a community that believes in their success.

The Road to Brazil

During our interview, Joshua shared what it takes to compete at the highest levels of karate. His training schedule is intense, requiring both physical and mental preparation to perform against some of the world's best athletes.

Representing the United States in Brazil is an incredible honor, but international competition also comes with significant expenses. Travel costs, accommodations, tournament fees, equipment, and ongoing training expenses can add up quickly.

Like many amateur and elite athletes, Joshua relies on community support to help make these opportunities possible.

Why Community Support Matters

One of the things I love most about our community is how people come together to support local talent, local businesses, and local families. When someone from our community achieves something extraordinary, it's an opportunity for all of us to be part of their journey.

Every contribution, no matter the amount, helps Joshua move one step closer to competing in Brazil and proudly representing Team USA.

Supporting young athletes is about more than funding a trip. It's about investing in dedication, perseverance, and the pursuit of excellence. It's about showing our future leaders and role models that their community stands behind them.

Building Stronger Communities Together

As a local real estate professional, I believe that serving our community goes beyond helping families buy and sell homes. It means supporting the people who make our neighborhoods stronger, inspire the next generation, and represent the values we all share.

Joshua's journey is a reminder of what can happen when talent, hard work, and community support come together.

I encourage you to watch the interview, learn more about Joshua's story, and consider supporting his journey to Brazil. Every donation, raffle entry, and share helps make a difference.

Chandler Community Spotlight: AZ Full Throttle and Team Lumpia Bring Cars, Culture, and Community Together

Discovering the Passion Behind Arizona's Growing Car Community

One of the best parts of attending local events is meeting the people who make our communities unique. During the recent Asian Festival in Arizona, I had the opportunity to connect with members of AZ Full Throttle and Team Lumpia for a fun and insightful conversation about cars, friendship, culture, and community.

While their vehicles may be what initially catches people's attention, it's the relationships, shared experiences, and support for one another that truly define this group.

Who Are AZ Full Throttle and Team Lumpia?

AZ Full Throttle and Team Lumpia are made up of a diverse group of young people brought together by a shared passion for cars, motorcycles, road trips, and community involvement.

What started as friends enjoying automotive culture has grown into a supportive network where members encourage one another, attend local events, participate in car shows, and create lasting friendships.

And yes, as the name suggests, there's usually some delicious lumpia involved too.

More Than Just Cars

Many people see a car club and assume it's only about modified vehicles, engines, and car shows. After speaking with members of AZ Full Throttle and Team Lumpia, it quickly became clear that their organization is about much more.

Their community provides:

  • Friendship and support
  • Opportunities to meet new people
  • Group rides and mountain drives
  • Participation in local events
  • Cultural connection through shared experiences
  • Positive representation within Arizona's automotive community

The group's passion for cars serves as a foundation, but the friendships they build are what keep members involved.

Representing Culture Through Community

One of the things that stood out during our conversation was how proud the members are of their cultural roots and how they use community events like the Asian Festival to connect with others.

Events such as the Arizona Asian Festival create opportunities for people from different backgrounds to celebrate traditions, food, music, and community while learning from one another.

Groups like Team Lumpia help showcase the diversity that makes Arizona such a vibrant place to live.

Whether it's sharing food, stories, or automotive passions, these experiences help strengthen connections throughout the community.

The Energy of the Asian Festival

The Asian Festival provided the perfect backdrop for our interview.

Visitors enjoyed cultural performances, local vendors, food, community organizations, and opportunities to connect with people from many different backgrounds.

For AZ Full Throttle and Team Lumpia, the event was another opportunity to showcase their vehicles, meet new friends, and represent their community in a positive way.

The energy, enthusiasm, and welcoming atmosphere reflected exactly what community events should be about—bringing people together.

Why Community Matters

One of the reasons I enjoy creating Local Spotlight interviews is because they allow us to highlight the people, organizations, and groups that contribute to the fabric of our Arizona communities.

Whether it's a small business owner, local nonprofit, community leader, athlete, or car club, every story helps us better understand the people who make Arizona special.

AZ Full Throttle and Team Lumpia demonstrate how shared interests can create meaningful connections and lasting friendships.

Their story is a reminder that communities are built through relationships, support, and a willingness to bring people together.

Watch the Interview

Be sure to watch the full interview to hear directly from members of AZ Full Throttle and Team Lumpia about:

  • How the club started
  • Their passion for cars and motorcycles
  • The friendships they've built
  • Their involvement in Arizona's car culture
  • What community means to them

Their enthusiasm is contagious, and their story highlights the positive impact local groups can have on the people around them.

Supporting Local Communities Across Arizona

As a local Arizona real estate professional, I believe strong communities are built by the people who live, work, volunteer, and share their passions with others.

That's why I enjoy spotlighting local businesses, community groups, cultural events, and organizations that make Chandler, Phoenix, Mesa, Gilbert, and communities throughout Arizona such wonderful places to call home.

If you know of a local business, community group, event, or organization that deserves recognition, I'd love to hear about it.

Together, we can continue celebrating the people and stories that make Arizona unique.

Arizona Home Inspection Tips with Phil

Arizona Home Inspection Tips: Protecting Your Home Before the Summer Heat

Arizona summers can be tough on a home, which is why regular maintenance and a thorough home inspection are so important. In this Local Spotlight video, Cabrina Sampaga sits down with professional home inspector Phil Gaines of Copperstate Inspections LLC to share practical advice for Arizona homeowners, buyers, and anyone preparing to maintain their home with confidence.

Whether you are buying a home, moving into a new build, or taking care of your current property, this conversation covers helpful tips to protect your investment and give you greater peace of mind.

What You’ll Learn

In this video, Phil shares important home maintenance and inspection insights, including:

  • Why HVAC servicing is essential before Arizona’s summer heat arrives

  • Why roof maintenance matters, especially for concrete tile roofs and felt paper

Community Heroes Program (Desert Financial) - Interview with Karla

Community Heroes Program: Helping Arizona Heroes Achieve Homeownership

In this video, Cabrina Sampaga sits down with Karla from Desert Financial to discuss the Community Heroes Program, a powerful opportunity designed to help teachers, healthcare workers, first responders, military veterans, and other community heroes achieve homeownership.

If you have been dreaming of owning your first home but thought it was not possible, this program may be the solution you have been waiting for.

What You’ll Learn in This Video

Karla shares helpful details about the Community Heroes Program, including:

  • 100% financing, which means no down payment may be required
  • No PMI, or Private Mortgage Insurance, which may help buyers save approximately $300–$500 per month
  • Who may qualify as a “Hero,” including educators, medical staff, first responders, and more
  • The first-time homebuyer requirement, which generally means no property ownership within the last 3 years
  • Eligible property types, including single-family homes, townhomes, and condos in Arizona
  • Minimum credit score expectations, typically around 680
  • How to build a pathway toward qualification if you are not quite there yet
  • How closing costs may be covered through concessions of up to 3%
  • Why early planning with your real estate agent and loan officer is key

This program is flexible, inclusive, and designed to support both active and retired professionals, including military veterans. One of the major highlights is that there are no income limits required, making it a valuable option for many eligible buyers.

Why This Program Matters

For many first-time buyers, the down payment and monthly mortgage costs can feel like major barriers to homeownership. Programs like this may help make buying a home more accessible, especially for those who serve and support our communities every day.

Even if you are not ready to buy immediately, learning about your options early can help you prepare your credit, understand your budget, and create a realistic path toward homeownership.
